Project Brief
The project began by identifying a conceptual business where the process of typeface design could be explored. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) became an intriguing opportunity to design for as the font would need to appeal to a broad audience. From seasoned concert-goers to those attending the orchestra for the first time, the goal became capturing the essence of QSO’s brand and the experience of listening to orchestral music.
The Outcome
New Manuscript captures the essence of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra by incorporating motifs found in ornate typography from vintage music sheet covers and manuscripts. The font balances historical influence with a contemporary aesthetic by combining bifurcated serifs with subtle geometric influences. Made as a large-scale display font, the resulting letterforms are eye-catching and emotive. The font reinterprets the dynamism and artistry of the orchestra to reflect QSO’s heritage and modern vision.
The final font was refined through critique provided by
Clint Harvey and Troy Leinster.
