The Brief
The core requirement of this project was to create an installation using typography that was accessible, relevant, and connected to the student experience, fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration within one of Australia’s oldest art and design institutions. The project also presented unique challenges due to limited space, foot traffic, and the need to consider social distancing and contact restrictions during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Outcome
The outcome is a dynamic installation that users can access via an electronic device. Hidden QR codes around the campus trigger the installation, inviting users to explore the path of text and discover the college’s history. The interactive experience can be added into any environment, shared with friends, or revisited later, overcoming the limitations of physical space and promoting social distancing. To improve legibility, the installation features Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface developed in consultation with the Braille Institute.
